| Criteria and Application Procedures
Scholarships shall be awarded to male students enrolled in Member Schools who apply, and meet the criteria set out below. There are two classifications of scholarships:
- BC Secondary Schools' Rugby Union Scholarships
- BC Secondary Schools' Rugby Union/BC Rugby Referees' Society Referee Scholarship
Section A: BC Secondary Schools' Rugby Union Scholarships
Scholarships shall be designated as follows:
- British Columbia Secondary Schools' Rugby Union Scholarships
- Derek Hyde-Lay Memorial Scholarships
- British Columbia Rugby Union (Benj O'Connor) Scholarship
- Pacific Northwest Over-40 Rugby Union Scholarships
- Lower Mainland Zone Scholarship
- Fraser Valley Zone Scholarship
- Barry Legh (UBC) Scholarship
- Donn Spence (UBC) Scholarship
- Bruce Howe (UVic) Scholarship
Value
Up to fourteen (14) scholarships will be offered in 2008. Each is valued at $750.00.
Eligibility and Criteria
Scholarships shall be awarded to graduating students proceeding to a full-time program of studies at a bona fide post-secondary institution approved by the Executive.
Candidates must demonstrate:
- excellence in rugby
- strong scholastic achievement
- character, citizenship and leadership
The Executive may choose to award up to four of these scholarships to candidates who demonstrate All-Round Excellence. In addition to meeting the requirement of scholastic achievement, they will have been leaders within their school and/or community and have made a valued contribution to their school rugby program, though not necessarily have been selected for representative teams at the zone, provincial or national level.
Application Procedures
Each candidate must submit a typed personal letter of application which provides:
- name, age, mailing address, phone number and an e-mail address;
- an indication of his intended post-secondary program of studies;
- a summary of his involvement with rugby during his secondary school years;
- a summary of school and/or community service.
Supporting documentation must include:
- a letter from the school principal (or his/her designate) certifying character, scholastic achievement and school citizenship;
- a letter from the school coach certifying leadership, sportsmanship and, in particular, the level of rugby ability;
- where applicable, a letter from a member of the community writing with regard to leadership qualities, character and community activities;
- a transcript of grades showing final percentages for all grade eleven and twelve courses completed, as well as interim percentages for all courses in progress; and
- a 2" x 3" (head and shoulders) photo.
Each candidate must provide all of the required information, documents and letters in order for his application to be considered. Please note that all letters and supporting documents become the property of the British Columbia Secondary Schools' Rugby Union. Faxed or e-mailed applications will not be accepted. Please also note that late applications will not be accepted.
Scholarship Availability
Subject to suitable applications being received, the Executive shall ensure equitable representation for candidates from both AAA and AA schools, and from zones throughout the province.
Payment of Scholarship Funds
A scholarship will be paid to the successful applicants upon receipt by the BC Secondary Schools' Rugby Union of proof of registration in a full-time program of studies at a post-secondary institution approved by the Executive. Receipt of the award may be deferred for a period no longer than one academic year.
Section B: BC Secondary Schools' Rugby Union/BC Rugby Referees' Society Scholarship
Value
One scholarship (valued at $1,000.00) shall be awarded to a graduating male student enrolled in a Member School who applies, and is proceeding to a full-time program of studies at a bona
fide post-secondary institution approved by a Scholarship Committee representing both organizations.
Eligibility and Criteria
Candidates must demonstrate:
- a strong interest in rugby refereeing, and the intention to move through the approved IRB levels of formal referee certification;
- strong athletic achievement;
- character and citizenship;
- proven leadership within their school and/or community; and
- a valued contribution to their school’s rugby program.
Application Procedures
Candidates must submit a typed personal letter of application which provides:
- name, age, mailing address, phone number and an e-mail address;
- an indication of the intended post-secondary program of studies:
- a summary of involvement with rugby during the secondary school years;
- a summary of involvement with refereeing and the level of certification (if any) currently held; and
- a summary of school and/or community service.
Supporting documentation must include:
- a letter from the school principal (or his/her designate) certifying character, scholastic achievement and school citizenship;
- a letter from the school coach, a club coach or member of a referees society who can verify involvement with refereeing and the level of certification (if any) currently held;
- a letter from the school coach verifying the leadership, sportsmanship and suitability for this scholarship;
- where applicable a letter from a member of the community writing with regard to leadership qualities, character and community involvement;
- a transcript of grades showing final percentages for all grade eleven and twelve courses completed, as well as interim percentages for all courses in progress; and
- a 2" x 3" (head and shoulders) photo.
Each candidate must provide all of the required information, documents and letters in order for his application to be considered. Please note that all letters and supporting

Payment of Scholarship Funds
Full (or in part) redemption of the value of the scholarship must be completed by September 1 two years following school graduation (see below);
Payment of $500.00 following completion of the IRB Level 1 Certification
Payment of the final $500.00 following completion of the IRB Level 2 Refereeing Certification.
Note: Proof of registration at a post-secondary institution must accompany the claim for the first $500.00, and proof of referee certification at each level must be issued by the BC (or other provincial) Rugby Referees' Society.

Letters of application for all scholarships, together with supporting documentation, must reach:
